[Locked from Penny and Hammer//Hackable]

Okay. So. I bought a Christmas present and I think jewelry was the right idea because that's what you get a girl you really care about right? I found something really awesome, or at least I think it's pretty cool. But that probably means it's a little weird and I should just go with a normal heart-shaped heart. By which I mean a symbolically-shaped heart rather than an anatomically correct heart.

Christmas is in two days I should not still be worrying about this. Help?

I need a plan just in case Bad Horse shows up again.

I need powerful allies.

I need to stop freaking out over Christmas presents.

She has a duck for a pet. I think you'll be all right.

I guess. But ducks are cute. Maybe I should have gotten something cuter? But it's probably fine. At least I didn't forget to get her something until yesterday.

It's not as if you're getting her a real heart for Christmas. As it is, it remains solidly in the "quirky" not "creepy" category.

Well, no, I know better than to get her a real heart. That's something I would want. I mean, like a cow heart or something. Somebody was giving people real human hearts last year and that was disturbing.

Yeah, wrapped up in paper and everything, I think. There are enough bizarre murder sprees around here that it gets hard to remember the details.

I hope they were at least thoughtful enough to send the hearts back to their original owners.
All right, joking, sorry! Anyway, it seems as if it should be fine.

That depends. What's she like?

She's...basically the nicest person in the world. She went to art school, but right now works at the Library and runs the City Welcome Center. She likes adorable animals and stuff.

She may not go for the real heart thing then. She might prefer something more cutesy than that. Unless you know she likes weird things.

Well, me. Her style's kind of unique, so I don't think she'd hate it. But still. Maybe I'll also get something else, in case.

If you tell her that you thought a lot about it and what to get her, she'll probably like it no matter what it is. Girls tend to like when a guy thinks about something to get them. It makes it more special.

I hope so. Thanks for the advice, I don't really know much about what girls like or not.

It's no problem. It's nice of you to get her a gift. This must seem weird, some random person giving you advice.

It's a heart pendant. But steampunk. Like that curse that one time.

The one with the machines. Ugh.

But hearts don't look like that, though, do they? They look like this:

Yeah, that one. Well, the old-fashioned machines. To me, I mean. Except not precisely like actual things from my history. It's hard to explain.

No, not the real ones inside people.

No, I know what you mean. The machines that make me sick, not the ones that might as well be magic.

...Really? How very odd!

...That sounded kind of wrong for some reason.

Machines with gears make you sick?

Well, machines do, but a lot of what modern people seem to call machines don't really look like machines at all. Where I'm from, machines are horrible things of metal and gears and--they're just unnatural. Wrong, somehow.

If you have the budget for it, you could also get her a normal heart pendant. Those aren't hard to find- I think I have a watch that pins on like that, actually. I could give you a discount.

I think your present is very nice, however.

That sounds like a good idea--I could always give it to her for another occasion. Haven't talked to you in a while since I can never really know what's up with you. Is your shop open yet?

I think that shows, and I think it's important for special gifts to represent the person giving them.
